WORKPLACE WELLNESS PROGRAMS OFFER MANY BUSINESS BENEFITS

Director of Health, Wellness and Virtual Services St. Peter’s Health
Many studies have shown that creating a culture of wellness in the workplace is key to not only improving employee health, but to improving the bottom line as well.
One important tool companies looking to promote health and wellness can use is a workplace health and wellness program. These programs help employees take a more active role in their health by offering things like wellness screenings, access to health tools and support resources. Programs often include opportunities to claim incentives like health insurance premium or deductible reductions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed 56 published studies of workplace health and wellness programs that showed well-implemented workplace health programs can lead to 25 percent savings each on absenteeism, health care costs and workers’ compensation and disability management claims costs.
At St. Peter’s Health, we know that healthy, happy employees who work in a supportive wellness culture help us provide gold standard care to our patients. Our growing People Health and Wellness department includes a variety of services and resources, including an onsite Employee Behavioral Health Professional and dedicated Employee Health team. Our Employee Wellness Incentive Program gives eligible employees enrolled in the system’s health insurance plan the opportunity to reduce their health care premiums and get a larger health savings account contribution if they meet a set of requirements. In 2020, 73 percent of incentive eligible employees participated in the Wellness Program and received a reduced premium.
Whether it’s a local health care system or a community bank, it’s safe to say that promoting health and wellness in a workforce is good for business.
St. Peter’s offers services to help local companies and organizations manage their workplace wellness programs. Our Wellness Services team provides on-site screenings done through simple blood draws that screen for a wide variety of conditions, including heart health, pre-diabetes and high blood pressure. The early detection provided by screenings can be key to reducing the risk of serious illness. Preventing serious illness not only saves lives, it plays an important role in improving productivity and reducing overall health care costs.
Wellness Services also provides wellness program incentive management and follow-up services to help employees meet their health goals. If employees are interested in comprehensive screening, additional tests can be ordered by employees at a discounted rate and don’t require an extra blood draw or extra time. We also offer flu shots on-site, and can bill to individual insurances or group bill at a discounted rate.
