Keeping Your Child Happy
on their First Flight
by Joy Ross, Travel Journeys
If your child has never been on an airplane there are some easy steps to do to prepare them for their rst
ight. Here are some ideas to help your child look forward to their new adventure and excited about ying.
1. Choose the Right Destination
I suggest choosing a nearby destination for your child’s rst ight. Choose somewhere close with a non-stop ight within 3-4 hours of your home. You want it to be a positive, relatively easy and stress-free experience.
2. Entertainment is the Key
Use iPads and tablets the entire time your kids are in their seats. Before your trip, download some new games on your child’s tablet. It will help keep them entertained for a large portion of the trip. You can also purchase movies online and download them to your device. Be sure to bring along a set of headphones.
The plane ride itself may very well be entertainment enough for your child. Book them a seat near the window and allow them to watch the clouds go by.
3. Bring on the Snacks
Bring a small supply of your child’s favorite nger foods. Gum works well once you trust your kids won’t leave it on the seat for the next passenger!
4. Talk about The Plane Ride
One of the best ways to prepare your child for any new experience is to discuss it. Sit down as a family talk about going on an airplane. Even take a ride to the airport and showthemtheplanestakingo andlanding. Showthem pictures and read travel books on where they are going.
Those with kids, know that no amount of preparation can guarantee a smooth ight. Remember, no matter how bad it may be in the moment, the ight will not last forever. There will always be some grumpy people, but most travelers are very sympathetic of the trials and tribulations of ying with a young child.

5. Teach Your Child the Rules of the Flight
• Use inside voices on the plane - no yelling, screaming or whining.
• Don’t kick, push, or pull on the seat in front of you.
• Only open the tray table when you need it and close it gently.
