MUSIC IN CASTLE ROCK
Recently we’ve had an opportunity to discuss live music with numerous venues in Castle Rock, Colorado Springs and Denver. And as is always the case, the conversations addressed costs.
There are basically two types of places that present live music, restaurants/bars and concert music venues (which usually incorporate a bar and limited food). They are in direct competition and their live music selections differ signi cantly. The former is usually free; the later charge an admission fee. Neither can make money unless they get people in the door.
So, what’s the difference? Basically, it’s the length of the show, but it’s also the quality of the music.
The ‘Restaurant/Bar Model’ (currently free) does not typically provide a sound system and the act will play for 3-5 hours, taking a break about every 45 minutes. The acts aren’t going to be national or touring bands .Many places spend 10’s of thousands of dollars a year on live music and they have to watch how they spend their entertainment money
The ‘Concert Music Venue Model’ (charging admission) will have a quality sound system, stage, lights and sound engineer(s) as well as large dance areas. They present 3-5 acts with set times ranging from 30-90 minutes. They can afford to bring in higher quality acts including national and touring bands.
Not many people can listen to the same band for hours (I know I can’t). In fact, most bands don’t have that much great (or even good) material.
Castle Rock could use a good concert music venue. ~ Sam

‘Leslie Organ Speaker’
Technology in Music
This unit is one of my all time favorite pieces of equipment. It’s iconic sound is present on most every great piece of Jazz, Blues and Rock music that incorporates an organ.
It was designed in the late 1930’s by Donald Leslie and rst marketed in 1941 (after being turned down by Hammond Organ) as an add on for electric organs to provide a pipe or theater organ sound. It’s slogan: ‘Pipe Voice of the Electric Organ’.
Leslie marketed it through his own company and it was quickly accepted, becoming a commercial and critical success after receiving national radio exposure.
You may not know one when you see it, but when the musician playing the organ lights
it up, you’ll recognize the sound.
