Another resource available to local gardeners is Plant Select (found at plantselect.org). Plant Select details searchable plants that have been successfully tested for enduring our high altitude, bright sunshine and variable weather conditions. One such plant found at plantselect.org, that may be a choice for a “thrill” in a container, or as a border within a bed, is the Denver Daisy Black Eyed Susan, which reaches heights of 18-24” (and widths of a similar range). This hybrid was named to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Denver. Applying the ‘right plant, right place’ mantra of Plant Select, a gardener searching would nd the Denver Daisy Black Eyed Susan by ltering related features and discovering that this plant is suited for part sun/shade, blooms in the summer with yellow and red blooms, and is
deer resistant, and attracts pollinators. Other lters include tree/shrub types, foliage colors, fall colors, and other general attributes. Using the helpful tools at plantselect.org can help you make the most of the time and investment of planting perennials and annuals. Keeping these resources and tips in mind aids in the challenge of gardening within Colorado’s variable weather.
