The goats were in the area for about 10 days clearing overgrown vegetation. These are working goats, not petting goats. They were enclosed by an electric fence that’s moved as the goats clear one area and moved to the next. They were guarded by two border collies and herders who stayed with them. Goats have an appetite for the kind of vegetation that makes up the re ladder and their work results in a rebreak or open space that’s cleared of vegetation so ames don’t spread as easily in the event of a wild re. They aren’t picky eaters and they’ll devour just about anything, including milk thistle, bindweed, poison ivy and even the leaves o Russian olive trees. They stand on their hind legs, and even climb on other goats, to reach vegetation up to 5 feet o the ground. They also can reach the underbrush of Gamble Oak that’s hard for mowers to get to. The goats are e cient and provide an environmen- tally friendly way to reduce wild re risk and provide weed-management control.
