s much as I don’t watch the news, I keep hearing the phrase “dark winter.” I  nd this both disturbing and reassuring—disturbing in as much as what is meant by those saying it, and reassuring in as much as winter is always dark, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. Historically, winter is the season of greatest hardship—our physical and subsequent mental needs peak with the environmental challenge.
Both literally and  guratively, our ancestors have dealt with dark winter after dark winter and so these “unprecedented times” are perhaps less unprecedented than we would like to believe. Sure, the details are different, but the challenge of life in all its gritty delight is as old as humanity. Our deep relationship with plants is just as old. As the winter holidays approach, here are two plants that make frequent appearances. They’ve been making hard times less bleak for centuries, perhaps this year they could make their way into your traditions in one way or another.
HOLLY —
Deck those halls! Holly has been brought into homes because of its evergreen leaves. A number of traditions regarding the precise harvesting, installation, and end-of-season removal have developed over the centuries. The true hollies, genus Ilex, are notably absent from Colorado
