Hammond investigated eight murders while he was sheri 
as well as drug abuse, missing persons, domestic violence, and robberies. He unearthed the
remains of Adolph Coors III,
who was murdered for ransom money in 1960, and a few pictures of Hammond on the scene appeared in Time Magazine. These pictures are on display at the Robert A. Christensen Justice Center in Castle Rock.
Hammond was a recognized leader among his peers, as well having served in leadership roles of the Colorado Sheri s’ and Peace O cers’ Association for many years. In 1960-61 he served as the President when the Annual Meeting was held in the Lincoln Room at the Shirley-Savoy Hotel in Denver.
One piece of Hammond’s legacy in Douglas County can be seen at the Crull-Hammond Cabin, a historic structure from 1874 that once stood on his turkey ranch. It is on the road south of Tomah Road going into Bear Dance,

and is open during special events, providing a peek into what life was like for some of Douglas County’s earliest migrants.
Hammond’s long career as Sheri  shaped the values of law enforcement in Douglas County. He wrote in his Sheri ’s O ce manual, “...it must
be realized that as law enforcement o cers and public employees we have a fundamental obligation to the people we serve to constantly develop and maintain the highest ethical standards in both personal and o cial conduct.” This is as true today as it was in Sheri  Hammond’s. l
