It is important to brush your pet’s teeth at home. Studies show that brushing three or more times a week make a difference in tarter build up on the teeth but if you’re not brushing daily your pet’s teeth will build up with tartar quickly.
So how do you brush the teeth? We suggest that you go into the bathroom with your pet and shut the door. Preferably at the same time every day. Keep special treats on the counter used only for the teeth cleaning process. Work slowly into the teeth cleaning. For example, having the dog stand still and letting you lift the lip could be day one and the dog receives a treat. Once this is mastered then use a toothbrush. The rst time using the toothbrush just touch one tooth then give a reward. In this manner slowly introduce the teeth cleaning process. Some dogs will bite a toothbrush so in that case change to a nger brush or nger wipe.
What does seem to help immensely is chewing. I would avoid antlers and dried up bones, they are too hard and I see a lot of broken teeth from chewing on these. It is better to go with tendons, bully sticks, Whimzies, Greenies, etc. Bones can be safe if they are fresh. After the dog eats all the meat and marrow the bones tend to get dry and hard. I suggest throwing them away at this point.
Cats are much more of a challenge. You can try using a Q-tip dipped in one of the many tooth products designed for cats.

The type of toothpaste you use is important, try to find an antibacterial tooth product that your pet enjoys. You may want to begin the teeth brushing training without toothpaste using just water.
Many clients ask me if products to put on the food or in the water prevent plaque buildup. In my experience it helps but does notpreventbuildup. Itmay slow it down.
