“Akron General has a record of training family medicine physicians
to serve our community. But the need in the community demands
that we grow our staff year over year.”
—Douglas Harley, DO, Director of Akron General’s Family Medicine Residency Program

LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION IN MEDICAL EDUCATION
In 2018, the Center for Family Medicine launched a new curriculum in partnership with Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The Transformational Care Continuum (TCC) aims to improve the health of the community by building a pipeline of primary care physicians skilled at managing patient populations and addressing patients’ social determinants of health. In fact, students make a commitment to stay in the community after graduation, caring for the underserved in Northeast Ohio.
From day one, TCC students begin their medical education in a clinical setting with patients and physicians, rather than just a classroom. The TCC program uses a unique six- year format including Undergraduate (medical school) and Graduate (residency) training for four students each year
at Akron General. The TCC curriculum focuses on team- based problem solving and embeds students in the local community. As members of a designated health care team,
students care for the same patient group throughout the duration of their education and residency.
Akron General is now investing in new equipment and renovated facilities for the TCC program.
The first group of TCC students began in August 2018 and will matriculate into residency July 2021. With the addition of four TCC students annually, Akron General will equip 20 residents annually to meet the community’s needs for primary care physicians.
