LEADERSHIP MESSAGES A MESSAGE FROM
WILLIAM SPROULE
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY-TREASURER
NEW LEADERSHIP, SAME PATH
It is truly an honor to have been entrusted with the position of Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Keystone + Mountain + Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters. In following the example of former EST and current Eastern District Vice President William R. Waterkotte, I am motivated to bring our council into its next chapter and meet our opportunities and challenges head-on. With the dedication and hard work of our Executive Board, leadership team, staff, and most importantly, the participation of all of our members, we will continue to thrive and nd new levels of success as a union.
Our council is laser-focused on accomplishing the same goals as it's always had: achieving 70% market share, combatting tax fraud practices by unscrupulous contractors, defeating right-to- work legislation, aggressively negotiating collective bargaining agreements for our union brothers and sisters, and becoming more in uential in our communities and with our elected leaders. Winning these battles is all part of our effort to make sure our working families have a fair shot at the American Dream. We will continue to develop and implement plans to provide our union with the tools necessary to better the lives of all our members.
Just this year, we began a campaign to ght tax fraud practices in our region. This growing campaign is part of the UBC's national effort to strengthen our union and protect workers from unfair labor practices while providing our communities with the tax
revenue they deserve. Tax fraud harms the daily lives of every American citizen. Unscrupulous contractors are taking advantage of workers while gaining more pro t for themselves. Every year we pay our taxes. We need enforcement of cials to use the power provided to them to make sure all contractors pay their fair share as well. It is campaigns like this that will strengthen our union and, in turn, make the communities we live in thrive and grow.
Unfortunately, there are still many unscrupulous contractors, labor brokers, right-to-work politicians, and other competitors in our industry that are looking to prevent our growth. Our adversaries are established and well-funded, so we cannot simply ignore them in the hope they will go away. Developers are constantly seeking ways to make even larger pro ts off the backs of undercut workers. The only way to defeat them is through our collective hard work. Through our union's core belief to "Organize, Agitate, Educate" we will strengthen our union and weaken the standing these bad actors have in our communities. Protecting the way of life for our members has never been more important.
Our leadership may change, but our focus will never waiver. We wake up every morning with a job to do. I am excited to continue to build on our council's great legacy to forge a stronger union for all of our brothers and sisters of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
