WHAT IS REAL? THE DANGER OR THE FEAR?
In 2016, I attended a personal development program that forever changed my life. I have a fear of heights and the objective during one of the activities was to climb a telephone pole, stand with both feet on the top of the pole and then jump off to a trapeze. Of course I was tethered in a harness so I was physically safe, but try climbing up the telephone pole and standing on it while it’s wobbling back and forth. This wasn’t something that I had planned on doing that morning when I woke up and I had a real fear run through my body as I tried to stand on top of the pole. So where did my fear come from?
It is a normal part of children’s development to go through different stages of fear. What is important is that they are transitory. As children learn to overcome these fears they learn that they can deal with life, they can overcome challenges and say to themselves, ‘That wasn’t so bad after all!’
