surgery are met, even after demonstrably successful surgery. They still FEEL the same as they did before the surgery.
Their original idea that changing the outer appearance of their body will make them feel better is proved to be incorrect. They still feel the same as they did before surgery, even though they look different.
This phenomenon led Dr Maltz to conclude that they must hold an image of themselves inside that did not necessarily correspond to their appearance on the outside; and that changing how they look on the outside does not necessarily cause a change in how they see themselves on the inside.
He also realized that their feelings must somehow stem from the inner image of their appearance rather than their outer image of what they actually look like.
Like Dr Maltz, Dr Bafitis has noticed that some people coming for reconstructive or reparative surgery need the surgery. But some people seem to need spiritual surgery .. or emotional surgery more than they seem to need physical surgery. Some people seem to need all three.
THE SELF IMAGE
Dr Maltz concluded that this inner image we hold of ourselves is a powerful force in our life. These ideas of the sort of person we are, of how successful we are supposed to be, of how we are meant to think and feel and act in response to our life experiences can be collectively and conceptually labeled as the Self Image.
It is interesting to consider that we are not born with these ideas about ourselves. In fact, we are not born with any ideas at all. Where do these ideas come from then? As you think about this, it quickly becomes obvious that they must come from the experiences of our lives and from our perceptions of those experiences.
