 Relaxation Exercise 6 : Humming Breathing Relaxation Exercise
This is a very simple exercise. Make sure you have read the section on page 117 entitled:
IMPORTANT: Read this before starting any of the relaxation or visualization exercises.
Find somewhere quiet to sit or lie down.
Close your eyes gently and breath normally for a moment or two.
When you are ready switch to breathing through your nose if you are not already. Make sure you are reasonably comfortable breathing through your nose. You may have a slight blocked nose, but if it is clear enough to breath, you may find it quickly unblocks as you do this exercise.
If you are unable to breath in through your nose, try breathing in through your mouth at first and then try periodically to breath in through your nose during the exercise.
Breath in quite deeply to a rough count of around five.
Them hum as you breath out. Try to keep the exhalation going for longer than the inhalation. As you are humming you should easily be able to manage this.
The longer the exhalation, as long as you are comfortable, the better.
When you have exhaled all the way out and you are ready for another round, repeat with an in breath.
After a few minutes of this, open your eyes and make sure you are comfortable. Then continue if you like.
