THE AUTOMATIC FAILURE MECHANISM 73
Ramana Maharshi put it this way:
Don’t bother trying to change the world because the world you see doesn’t even exist.
If this is true, then changing the world would be as simple as working on your own beliefs!
HOW DO YOU CHANGE YOUR BELIEFS?
A critical first step in taking back control is to understand that we all acquire beliefs and those beliefs are the result of our learning processes. They are not necessarily a reflection of reality.
You have acquired beliefs that are serving you. And you have also acquired beliefs that used to serve you, but that are actually now keeping you stuck where you don’t want to be. And you may also have acquired beliefs that have never served you.
Building an image of the person you want to be, in order to have the things you want to have, will bring you up against some of these beliefs. There will existing beliefs that clash with the new ideas that you are now entertaining as you think about the person you want to become; and as you entertain the thinking, feeling and acting that a person like that would engage in.
It can be very illuminating to re-evaluate these old beliefs and examine them in an unemotional, rational way, outside of the context where they normally automatically control your behavior, thinking and feeling.
Sometimes, it very quickly becomes apparent that a belief that you hold, that you have believed for years and years, is completely illogical and actually defies all reason. But because you’ve never really thought about it, you’ve never really noticed before just how flimsy its reasoning is.
