THE AUTOMATIC FAILURE MECHANISM 91
 Rather than mentally stepping outside yourself to witness what is going on as a 3rd party might, now try mentally stepping backside to experience what is going on as you.
After several minutes of practice, trying switching between the two. Become the observer of your experience for a period of time; then switch to being the experiencer of it.
Be a 3rd party observing from the outside for a period of time then switch to being you experiencing from the inside.
Don’t be attached to any particular outcome other than practicing and experimenting. You may have an automatic tendency to berate yourself for not doing it right! Catch yourself as early as you can if this happens, switch to the observer and witness how you talk to yourself.
The next time it happens and you catch it, stay in the experience of how you talk to yourself.
Most people struggle with these types of exercise. You cannot do this exercise wrong.
Just practice, experiment and experience!
When you are done, open your eyes, look around the room, become aware of the sounds around you and think about your experience of observing and experiencing your own thinking.
• How active was your mind?
• What were you thinking?
• Were you able to control your thoughts?
• How hard to you have to try not to try to control your thoughts?
• What part of you were you able to tap into, to enable you to become
the observer of your experience?
• This exercise can be very, very profound.
