537 evolved from within. As he thinks, so he is; as he continues
538 to think, so he remains.
539 A strong man cannot help a weaker unless the weaker is
540 willing to be helped, and even then the weak man must
541 become strong of himself; he must, by his own efforts,
542 develop the strength which he admires in another. None but
543 himself can alter his condition.
544 It has been usual for men to think and to say, "Many men are
545 slaves because one is an oppressor; let us hate the oppressor."
546 Now, however, there is among an increasing few a tendency
547 to reverse this judgment, and to say, "One man is an
548 oppressor because many are slaves; let us despise the slaves."
549 The truth is that oppressor and slave are co-operators in
550 ignorance, and, while seeming to afflict each other, are in
551 reality afflicting themselves. A perfect Knowledge perceives
552 the action of law in the weakness of the oppressed and the
553 misapplied power of the oppressor; a perfect Love, seeing the
