543 A strong man cannot help a weaker unless the weaker is
544 willing to be helped, and even then the weak man must
545 become strong of himself; he must, by his own efforts,
546 develop the strength which he admires in another. None but
547 himself can alter his condition.
548 It has been usual for men to think and to say, "Many men are
549 slaves because one is an oppressor; let us hate the oppressor."
550 Now, however, there is among an increasing few a tendency
551 to reverse this judgment, and to say, "One man is an
552 oppressor because many are slaves; let us despise the slaves."
553 The truth is that oppressor and slave are co-operators in
554 ignorance, and, while seeming to afflict each other, are in
555 reality afflicting themselves. A perfect Knowledge perceives
556 the action of law in the weakness of the oppressed and the
557 misapplied power of the oppressor; a perfect Love, seeing the
