THOMASTON CROSS COUNTRY:
Team Receives Gift of Shoes from Nike
The Thomaston High School Cross Country team received a special gift from Nike on Wednes- day, January 15. While the cross country team has often dominat- ed the Berkshire League, including winning the Class S State Champi- onship this past fall, this gift was unrelated to their victories. A rep- resentative named Chris Madaf- fari, a salesman known as a Nike EKIN, chose Thomaston High School as the recipient of their gift. Each runner received a pair of React Infinity running shoes.
Nike salespeople are known as EKINs because they are expected
to know the product backwards and forwards. EKIN is Nike spelled backward.
The shoes are brand new in design and have yet to be made available to the general public.
While meeting with the ath- letes, Mr. Madaffari spent some time questioning the athletes about what they love about run- ning. He also explained the design of the shoes.
The team’s coach, Mark Ol- son, was named Coach of the Year for 2019 by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
According to THS, Mr. Olson
was emotional about the gift be- cause one of the senior runners has been running with the same shoes since sophomore year.
This student was very appre- ciative and shared with Mr. Madaf- fari that the shoes he received were the nicest running shoes he’s ever had. He said he felt like he was walking on a cloud.
These shoes retail for $160 per pair and are designed to help reduce injuries. The team got its sneakers before they went on the market to the general public.
