people working from home or otherwise being home and away from the workplace.”
Although most car burglaries happen after dark, porch pirates tend to strike in broad daylight. Fortunately, there are practical steps that can be taken to minimize the oc- currence of package theft:
l When ordering online, select the option to pick the item up at the store instead of home delivery when feasible. l Use delivery instructions to direct placement of the
package in an inconspicuous place such as a back
porch or behind outdoor furniture.
l If you are unable to be home at the time of delivery,
have the package delivered to the home of a trusted friend or neighbor who will be home at the scheduled delivery time.
l When practical, have the package delivered to your workplace.
l Require a signature upon delivery. This requirement will shift the legal liability to the courier should the package be left unattended and contrary to instruc- tions.
l Request a tracking number to allow tracking of when and where the package is delivered.
l Install a security camera or video doorbell at your front door as a deterrent.
Car burglaries and package thefts are both frustrating and alarming. However, the good news is that the occur- rence of these crimes can be greatly diminished by imple-
menting some proactive yet simple measures.
