GOOD NEWS DEPARTMENT
BY TOM MURRAY
The fall sports season has begun. Before the season get fully under way, there will be much news about coaches which deserve to be included in the Connecticut Coach. As a leader in Connecticut high school sports, won’t you take a few minutes and send me information about high school coaches, their career milestone accomplishments, their awards and recognitions (Coach of the Year, Assistant COTY, hall of fame selections, etc.). Also information about the passing of coaches and newly hired coaches in your area will be appreciated. You can e-mail me (muraythomas626@ gmail.com or send clippings to me at: Tom Murray 124 South Montowese Street, Branford, CT 06405.
n Joe Canzanella, has been appointed to take over as CHSCA Executive Director. He replaces long-time direc- tor and Connecticut coach John Fontana, who passed away on Oct. 21, 2019. Canzanella has a wealth of experi- ence in high school athletics, recently serving as direc- tor of athletics for the New Haven schools. He has been closely associated with the CIAC for many years and has functioned in a great number of leadership roles for CIAC. He has been an active leader for the Coaches Association for decades.
n Joe Tonelli was named one of 12 recipients of the 2020 NFHS Citation Award for his work as part of the NFHS Officials Association. Joe was a former coach, athletic director at Notre Dame High School-West Haven and, from the 2005-06 season to 2019, the Director of the CIAC Officials Association, which he helped found. Joe was to have received his award last June at the Federation’s annual summer meeting, but the meeting was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully, he will receive the award sometime in the coming year.
