As Dr. Bob said ..., page 227
"There are many things Dr. Bob definitely did say, and many he might well have said - they sound characteristic of him. Apart from "Let's keep it simple", however, it is difficult to tell which are which. Different people had different perspectives on Dr. Bob. But regardless of their point of view, they were looking at the same man - serious and humorous, earthy and spiritual, outgoing and shy, friendly and aloof.
Dr. Bob did elaborate on his keep-it-simple theme as far as the A.A. program is concerned, incidentally. In a September 1948 article for the Grapevine, he wrote:
'As finally expressed and offered, they (the Twelve Steps) are simple in language, plain in meaning. They are also workable by any person having a sincere desire to obtain and keep sobriety. The results are the proof. Their simplicity and workability are such that no special interpretations, and certainly no reservations, have ever been necessary. And it has become increasingly clear that the degree of harmonious living which we achieve is in direct ratio to our earnest attempt to follow them literally under divine guidance to the best of our ability."

Big Book; "On the Move", page 491
"One evening I did the unimaginable - at least for me. After picking up my sponsor of the month to go to a meeting, I informed him that I was ready to work the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. In most respects my life began again that night. That man took me through the steps in a loving, gentle way that taught me to look inward at my soul, to welcome a Higher Power into my life, and to reach out to others. He taught me how to look into a mirror and to like, and even respect, the man who looked back at me."

 Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions,
Step 1, page 21
"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable." "We perceive that only through utter defeat are we able to take our first steps toward liberation and strength. Our admissions of personal powerlessness finally turn out to be firm bedrock upon which happy and purposeful lives may be built."
