how to develop new markets for any products they might be able to create with their food waste.
Small businesses really wanted help with communication and collaboration across the supply chain, and how to improve food storage processes. A big concern for small business was how to reduce packaging.
This is a big concern more broadly and there are two projects already underway at the CRC that are looking at packaging (more information is available on the CRC’s website). Also, communication came up again here for small businesses, with a need to get their workforce engaged.
Medium-sized businesses also told us about similar concerns relating to packaging and creating that cultural shift within their organisations
around food waste so it becomes part of everyone’s job.
Interestingly, the concept of a food waste audit started to enter the conversation with this sized operation. This is
efficiency assessments, identify and calculate resource efficiency, and understand the business value of improving resource efficiency.
And lastly, large operations told us that they were also looking for greater communication and collaboration across the supply chain, and how to develop new markets for products.
ONGOING TRAINING CALLS
To provide training to meet these needs, we now understand that Australian food businesses do not consider training as a one off event.
They told us there needs to be ongoing support, coaching, resources and even further training to help them implement what they learnt back into their businesses. Training must also be budget-friendly for micro and small businesses.
A resounding need from micro, small and medium Australian food businesses was that training should work across many food and supply chain sectors so businesses from different industries can learn from one another. Conversely, large businesses prefer to take this training in-house.
What this piece of work has shown us is that there IS a motivation to reduce food waste from a business perspective. And that is all we need to hear at the Fight Food Waste CRC.
We’re ready and willing to help more businesses with their food waste issues, especially through the provision of targeted training programs and ongoing support, so we can reach the ambitious target of an Australia without food waste. ✷
