Inkjet Printing
Inks that print direct onto both coated and uncoated stocks with no need for a primer, and now the inline coating, the webs are a compelling proposition.
For commercial printers looking at their next investment, heavy metal offset offers security and certainty, you know what you are getting. Installing inkjet for commercial print will be a pioneering move,
but then again Australia is full of pioneering print businesses.
Canon ProStream 1800
Canon Production Printing Australia launched the new ProStream 1800 continuous feed inkjet printer,
the newest model in its ProStream 1000 series, and aimed squarely at commercial printers.
With the higher web speed of 133m/min (66 per cent faster than the ProStream 1000), the ProStream 1800 produces up to 107,500 A4 images the equivalent of 11,300 B2 sheets 4/4 per hour.
The ProStream 1800 uses native 1,200dpi piezo drop-on-demand print heads and proprietary polymer pigment inks with Canon ColorGrip to ensure colour consistency. Canon’s Inline Quality Control, a high- performance camera system, also provides automatic print quality assurance, so operators can spend less time on quality control.
It will print across a range of media, including standard offset
coated, uncoated and inkjet optimised papers from 40gsm to 300gsm. It can handle a variety of applications, such as calendars, posters and point of sale, with the ability to print up to 556mm wide and 1524mm long.
Fujifilm JetPress 540W
Targeted at shorter run print applications traditionally run on web offset presses such as leaflets and magazines, educational journals, books and newspapers, it enables duplex printing within a single
tower design, resulting in a compact footprint of just 6.6m × 2.8m.
The JetPress 540W uses Fujifilm's high performance Vividia ink and FM screening technology to facilitate what Fujifilm says is “superb image quality with smooth colour tones and sharp text.”
It prints at up to 127m/min at 600 × 480dpi. It is available as a standalone system, or with Fujifilm, Hunkeler or Muller Martini post press equipment.
HP PageWide T250
HP is launching a new Brilliant Ink ink set with the new PageWide T250 continuous feed printer, that it says will enable it to compete directly for offset work.
The T250 is the upgraded version of the PageWide T240, running at 150 metres a minute and capable of

producing 62 million letter-sized pages a month. The new PageWide T250 HD has expanded media options for commercial, publishing, transaction, and direct mail applications.
Launching alongside the T250 are the new HP Brilliant Inks, which the company says marks a significant change. The new formulation is able to print directly to both coated and uncoated media without needing an extra step. The inks are specifically designed for commercial markets.
HP has replaced the primer station that was needed to run multiple stocks on the T240 with a new HP Optimizer, that runs in-line with
the rest of the printheads. The
new press also has an online coater capable of UV and aqueous coating, with, according to HP, a changeover between the two of less than ten minutes.
