SKILLS AND EMPLOYMENT
A lack of skilled technicians continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing the industry, and there is no indication it will be resolved any time soon. The figure of 5,000 critical jobs unfilled remains true, and most within the industry accept the problem is only deepening as technology leaves skills behind.
There continues to be a strong focus on apprenticeships following the transition to Trailblazers (four pathways within the industry: multi-skilled, paint, panel and MET) and the government’s Apprenticeship Levy, which early indicators would suggest has not been successful with a 61% reduction in take-up of apprenticeships post the introduction.
TRENDS OVER THE NEXT 3-5 YEARS?
Chances are high that there will continue to be gradual expansion within both the larger repairer networks and the regional bodyshop groups. These developments are seemingly now far more structured in approach and it’s very much about taking on new business or sites for the ‘right reasons’ . With this, segmentation of the repair sector will also continue, as business models are shaped around the work at hand. There is some suggestion around traditional, static sites themselves evolving to become ‘super centres’ (as part of a hub and spoke approached) or ‘heavy repair’ sites. Already there are signs of this happening.
One thing that also looks very likely to continue is the increasing influence vehicle manufacturers will have on the sector – technology looks set to be the key enabler
here and some new partnerships are emerging
between insurer and manufacturer which demonstrate how this could well shape future partnerships.
The other non-industry related theme that continues to bubble away is Brexit and what this might generally mean for the economy after 29 March 2019.
