ABOVE: Category winners and runners-up from Australasia’s Top Wedding Photographers.
Our very best
wedding photographers
We’re absolutely thrilled to bring you the results of the inaugural Australasia’s Top Wedding Photographers. There’s no denying that the pandemic has hit the wedding industry hard, so it seems like an opportune time to celebrate and recognise the impressive talent and skill of wedding photographers across Australia and New Zealand.
The response in the first year was overwhelming, and the results reveal that we have some
of the most creative photographers around. Entrants were able to enter two categories: Single Shot and Portfolio; the latter requiring a submission of five images. Entries were judged by a panel comprising some of the most respected photographers from around the world. My gratitude goes out to them for their time, wisdom, and expertise in helping to determine the winners,
runner-up, and finalists in the competition. Abundant thanks to Cinzia Bruschini, Sal Cincotta, India Earl, David and Luke Edmonson, Sanjay Jogia, The Kitcheners, Jennifer Moher, and Jose Villa.
To everyone who entered: thank you for helping to make the first year such a huge success. The breadth and quality of the images submitted made for a challenging task for the judges. Huge congratulations to all those featured in this very special edition of the magazine. It’s indeed a feather in your cap to have your work recognized by some of the biggest guns in the wedding industry. Congratulations to all the top finalists as well as those whose work received Highly Commended and Commended awards. You will all receive notification via e-mail.
And so, to the winners. You blew the judges away! Well done Mauro Cantelmi for taking out the Portfolio category and congratulations to Keegan Cronin for winning the Single Shot category.
Sensational work indeed. Congratulations also to the runners-up: Ashley Karakatsanis in the Portfolio category and Jerome Cole in Single Shot. The result for Single Shot came down to just a handful of points.
Let’s not forget that competitions like this simply aren’t possible without the generous support
of wonderful sponsors. Sony was the major sponsors, while BenQ sponsored the Single Shot category and MSI sponsored the Portfolio category. Thank you for helping to make this competition a reality.
Also in this edition, we chatted with one of the world’s leading portrait photographers, Platon, about NFTs and why he decided to get involved. His views are both controversial and provocative and markedly different to the masses hoping to jump on the bandwagon and make a fortune. Platon likens the current situation to something of a gold rush, which he describes as “gross”. Head to page 46 for the full story.
Recently, Australia’s last remaining peak body for professional photographers, the AIPP, was forced to close its doors. After more than 75 years, its ending is a rather sad moment for the industry and for its members. Notwithstanding all the AIPP gave to its members, I believe it’s the friendships, camaraderie, and support for one another that will be missed the most. We spoke with photographers and industry people whose association goes back decades as they reflected on the what brought about the end of the AIPP. You can find the story on page 40.
And finally, the call for entries for The Mono Awards, presented by SanDisk, is now open.
A celebration of black and white photography, the competition is run in conjunction with our sister publication, Australian Photography, and boasts a prize pool of $13,500, including $10,000 in cash. You can enter in any of the three categories: People, Places, Animals. Special early-bird pricing ends after 20 March. Head to www.themonoawards.com.au for all the details.
