  NEW GREEN STAR FOR HOUSING
An ambitious new standard for Australian homes will help drive the transformation of the housing market.
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has released Green Star for Homes: A strategy for the future.
GBCA CEO Davina Rooney said the council has been working in partnership with industry and government to help accelerate the transformation that has already begun in the residential sector.
“The delivery of new homes that meet a Green Star standard at volume is ambitious and challenging, but we are confident that we can support the housing market to deliver the transformation that has already begun,” she said.
Rooney said that all Green Star rated homes should be powered by renewables and be resilient to future climate change.

WA government stalls NCC updates for a year
INDUSTRY GROUPS HAVE criticised the West Australian Government’s decision to delay implementation of the latest updates to the Na- tional Construction Code (NCC).
The Australian Sustainable Built Environ- ment Council (ASBEC) said it is the wrong time to delay updates when energy efficiency is criti- cal to support economic stimulus measures.
ASBEC president, Professor Ken Maher AO said that stalling the introduction of better standards for new buildings and fit-outs will only delay the benefits to businesses, households and the wider economy.
“This is a disappointing outcome. The changes in the 2019 Code were developed through exten- sive engagement with industry and using evi- dence-based research,” he said.
The WA Government has deferred implemen- tation of the changes for a full 12 months. The latest update to the NCC represented the first major overhaul of the commercial provi- sions since 2010 and delivered a package of measures focused on reducing commercial en- ergy consumption by a potential 35 per cent, promising to usher in a major step-change around the country.
