  Don’t replace,
restore air-cooled units
AS AIR CONDITIONING usage grows it is im- portant to maximise the efficiency of each unit and not waste precious electricity.
By 2050, global energy use for air conditioning is set to triple, according to the International En- ergy Agency (IEA).
Promek Technologies technical director, Tony Power, said it is not just about achieving energy savings but improving efficiency on all levels right down to the actual air conditioning unit.
This can be achieved by using Thermal-XR, a thermally conductive coating that rebuilds lost thermal bonds in corroded air-cooled HVACR systems, restoring cooling performance and of- fering protection from further deterioration.
When applied to damaged condenser coils, the water-based coating reconnects heat ex- change surfaces, improving heat dissipation, re- turning old units to operational efficiency.
Power said typical reductions in condensing temperature of up to 16°C keeps these rejuvenat- ed units free from cutout even in unusually high ambient temperatures.
“Thermal-XR will increase EER by 14% and extend the life of degraded units by five to 10 years,” he said.
“Old coils restored and treated with Thermal- XR also deliver significant reductions in com- pressor load. This improved efficiency reduces electrical demand of the unit, decreases mainte- nance call out and increases the life of the asset.
“The simple procedure of applying a thin layer of the conductive coating on the heat exchange fins recreates the efficiency lost from environ- mental corrosion.
“THIS IS SMART TECHNOLOGY GENERATING SIGNIFICANT ENERGY SAVINGS BY COATING A COIL.”
“This is very smart technology, significant en- ergy savings are being seen up to 16% in most cases, just from coating a coil on site. As roughly 10% of the planet’s energy use goes to air-condi- tioning, using Thermal-XR is a worthwhile appli- cation to help lower global emissions.”

Developed in Australia with the cooperation of international research and testing laboratories, Thermal-XR brings together cutting-edge nano- science, an advanced chemical formulation and specialised binder mechanisms to produce a re- markable water based, high quality acrylic spe- cially designed for coating HVAC condenser coils.
Thermal-XR can be applied to all outdoor air- cooled heat exchange units from residential to large commercial and refrigeration. The restora- tion and application process is performed by trained HVAC and refrigeration mechanics fol- lowing procedures prepared specifically for this treatment.

Right plate for the right task
HIGH PERFORMANCE AND excellent heat transfer even at low temperature differences – these are essential requirements for heat ex- changers in power plants, steel production and district heating and cooling networks or for cool- ing data centres.
With the new NX350M, Kelvion has developed the right plate for this task.
Thanks to its 350 mm connection diameter and plate dimensions of approx. 1,000 mm width and 3,000 mm height, it can be used to build units for thermal outputs in the double-digit megawatt range.
Thin, pressure-resistant, plates with a corru- gation depth of only 2.4 mm and a highly turbu- lent media flow ensure efficient heat transfer.
The Optiwave design reinforces this effect by
NX350M plates are available in stainless steel and titanium
ensuring an exceptionally uniform flow over the entire width of the plate.
The NX350M plates are available in stainless steel and titanium. There is also a choice of cor- rugation angles to suit the operating conditions.
Other features of the new plate include com- patibility with NT universal racks, the proven EcoLoc system for perfect fit of the adhesive-free seals or the PosLoc design that automatically aligns the plates during assembly.
With the new NX350M, the NX plate series now comprises six different sizes with connec- tion diameters from DN 25 to DN 350. They cover various performance requirements in industry, power supply or data centre cooling.
The effectiveness of the new NX350M plate's heat transfer was tested using a unit five meters long and weighing around 20 tons. An output in the 2-digit megawatt range, as requested by the cus- tomer, was achieved under all operating condi- tions. Because the test unit results are incorporated into the characteristics for dimensioning Kelvion heat exchangers, it benefits all Kelvion customers, aswellascommissioningcompanies. ✺
