IAI’s New Division Boosts Land Forces Capabilities

or decades, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is widely recognized for its technological leadership in the aerospace and
defense domains. The company has also made great strides and fielded unique offensive and defensive capabilities for air, maritime and land warfare. As an add-on to IAI’s weapons, missiles, radars and aerospace systems that received worldwide recognition, in 2019 IAI began integrating its land-warfare solutions portfolio under a new and dedicated division and established it at the IAI’s subsidiary: ELTA Systems Ltd.
A central point to ELTA’s updated strategy, which is based on their record of accomplishment, is empowering maneuvering forces at the tactical echelons - from the infantry team and squad, mechanized tactical units, to battalion and brigade, there are many mature and combat-proven capabilities ELTA is ready to deliver.
The new strategy aligns with a profound change in how modern armies consider the threats they face were a threat in a spherical, three-dimensional scenario. The enemy has become
more sophisticated making it difficult to detect. In such a situation, attacks can be expected from any direction, short or long-ranges, inside buildings or open area, beyond the line of sight, and from the air or underground. To meet these challenges, ELTA has created advanced systems and solutions to specifically counter these complex situations.
For decades, ELTA has been providing the IDF with various combat solutions supporting the tactical formations in high
and low-intensity warfare.
ELTA has implemented many of these capabilities in the proof of concept as
a prime contractor, for the IDF Carmel program, which integrated, situational awareness, lethality, autonomous driving and advanced automation based on artificial intelligence, thus reducing operator workload. The integration of ELTA’s advanced technological solutions implemented for intuitive operation enabled a crew of two members to operate the combat vehicle with
closed hatches.
As part of the land systems portfolio, ELTA provides tailored solutions, which compose organic sensors and systems for target acquisition and force protection. These include detecting ATGMs, snipers, mortars, ground rockets and other
aerial and low signature threats. Some of the major capabilities are counter- UAS systems with hard-kill capabilities, multi-mission tactical radars such as the state-of-the-art (StormGuard), and hostile fire detection sensor (Othello). These unique sensors play a major role
in the protection and target acquisition
of a single platform and the fighting formations, and tactical intelligence gathering capabilities supporting combat formations at the lower echelons. To cope with the new battlefield challenges, ELTA proposes a variety of ground robotic and autonomous systems supporting end- to-end solutions for combat engineering, IED detection and route clearance, autonomous patrol, advanced guard and advanced combat capabilities.
Another facet of ELTA’s solutions for the land-forces is to harnesses the data obtained from the various sensors. It fuses the information into a situational picture enabling real time distribution
of critical data to decision-makers at any level to make faster and
optimal decisions.
Land solutions are also required
to operate on the move (OTM). ELTA produces its own integrated combat vehicles transforming its Z-series platforms: ZMAG, ZED and ZBAR to land and Special Forces platforms. These compact, rugged, off-road, high mobility vehicles are designed to deliver the off-road mobility, air transportability, and built-in autonomy, along with space and power reserves necessary for those systems to operate.
With the new focus on land system solutions, ELTA offers after-sale support for the delivered systems for the whole system’s life cycle involving
in-country companies.
