a drop in mission pod which is covertly hidden within the shape of the turret.”
Bisalloy Steel is another core component of AIC in the Lynx, as it is in Hanwha’s Redback.
“After two years of close research, testing and develop- ment with Rheinmetall, the first of two of the company’s armour steel grades developed in partnership with Rhein- metall has passed a stringent German Government certi- fication program,” Stewart said. “This certification will qualify the steel to be manufactured for Australian made Boxer CRVs, for export abroad and potentially as a source of supply to Rheinmetall in Germany.”
Other companies are also getting involved, including more than 50 identified since the first roadshows for the Boxers a few years ago.
Ultimately, Rheinmetall also holds up the promise of inte- gration into their global supply chain for companies teamed on their bid for Land 400 Phase 3. The Lynx is on offer across the world, and should it be successful elsewhere, those companies could find success in the export game.
In fact, the Lynx’s market breakthrough recently oc- curred in Hungary, which has selected the IFV as part of a wider program to modernise its armed forces.
“We are looking at global Lynx opportunities in addition to the Australian program,” Stewart said. “We want to en-
sure Australian companies can secure international oppor- tunities for years to come.”
EARTHQUAKES
Whilst the two shortlisted companies are clearly progress- ing on their teaming arrangements, not all has proved well on the Commonwealth side. Brigadier Greg McGlone, who was responsible for both Land 400 programs, was abruptly replaced in July without an official statement.
ADM understands that RDA and HDA were contacted less than 24 hours before BRIG McGlone’s replacement - Sarah Myers, Assistant Secretary in CASG’s Land Vehicle Systems Branch – took over. BRIG McGlone had been in the role for five years.
Moreover, the publication of the Force Structure Plan a few weeks earlier revealed that the expected cost of Phase 3 had jumped by an extraordinary 80 per cent, from $10-15 bil- lion to $18-27 billion. At the time, Defence told ADM that the increase in cost included acquiring more spares, a larger am- munition stockpile, more money for supporting infrastruc- ture and tailored training ranges, and a ‘longer, more feasible and sustainable’ local build.
Neither RDA nor HDA commented on the moves. Yet a higher out-turned cost could prove to be a boon for the local suppliers that both companies are organising for the bid of a generation. ■

customer testimonial
“We had particular issues with sourcing anti-fog eyewear that could be worn under a welding helmet. This was an issue that uvex was able to resolve. I highly recommend uvex for their products and trial service. They worked with us to find the right product
for our needs. Currently, we are using the uvex supravision THS anti-fog coating in the sportstyle and CX2 spectacle frame, which fits all of our workers, and the CBR lens to reduce glare from the strong lighting in the bay work area.”
