tem, we need to know how the ship is designed as an inter- face to the combat system. We start at a very top level from the requirements and then defining those boundaries very carefully with the Commonwealth and Naval Group and
ADM: Both you and Naval Group have been working through ICN for work packages. Have you found that a good way to interact with industry thus far?
NORTH: Yes, we have. We also do a series of what we call combat system forums. We publish things on ICN but pe- riodically we go to the capital cities and other places and
then once we’ve defined those boundaries, our baseline that we then design from.
We undertook that work with Naval Group in early 2017 and worked on that for the bet- ter part of 2017 to ensure we understood ex- actly what information and data the Naval Group required from us and when to design the boat and vice versa. So those boundaries are well managed.
that becomes
And that all rolls into the overall mas-
ter schedule for the program which is why
we are ahead of the boat construction be-
cause we need to get all that data to them
so that they’re able to then figure out
exactly – the basics of like how big their
power plant needs to be or how much heat
is in that space, and then they can move
out with their specifications into industry within the phase they’re working up to.
We use the ICN to announce our expres- sions of interest for research and development. It’s been a good avenue for us to communicate our timing and intent to industry, but I think it’s also important that we do the
face to face with industry as well.

do combat system forums. Some of those are classified and some of them certainly have sensitive data and we talk about the capa- bilities required, we provide details and the schedule of when we’ll be going to market for certain things.
I look at it as a big funnel. We’ve worked in Australia for decades now so we had a quite wide aperture of understanding capability within Australia. Then as you funnel what are those unique capabilities we need for a sub- marine combat system, and then you eventu- ally get to the point of doing requests for infor- mation and eventually RFQs out to industry.
They’re not quite there yet and we’re moving through our systems so that we can keep them on schedule as well.

the information loop...
