the SB-1 Defiant X. Both are now progressing through a Joint-Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) competition and a Request For Proposal (RFP) expected in the coming months. The initial increment of capability is planned to enter service with the first Army Aviation units in mid-2030.
The Army’s requirements call for a rotorcraft with agil- ity, speed, range and lethality, featuring a cabin compara- ble with the Black Hawk in size and able to accommodate 12 fully-equipped troops and two door gunners. They also demand a speed of at least 250 knots and a combat radius with 12 troops of up to 300 nautical miles, or between 500 and 800 nautical miles with a smaller payload. It will also be capable of other roles, including battlefield lift, air assault, casualty evacuation (casevac) and combat search and rescue (CSAR).
Because the performance demanded by the vision of fu- ture warfare, each FLRAA competitor is offering a differ-
ent solution: a tilt-rotor aircraft in the case of Bell, and an offset coaxial rotor and ‘pusher’ propellor propulsion sys- tem by Sikorsky and Boeing.
The first V-280 JMR-TD rotorcraft flew for the first time in December 2017 and has accumulated in excess of 300 flight hours during testing, reaching speeds in excess of 300 knots.
