54 FUTURE VERTICAL LIFT
JULY-AUGUST 2021 | WWW.AUSTRALIANDEFENCE.COM.AU
RIGHT: Another view of the Sikorsky S-97 Raider X on offer for the FARA.
“WAITING A DECADE OR MORE COULD ARGUABLY LEAVE ARMY INCAPABLE OF KEEPING UP WITH ITS MAJOR ALLY IN FUTURE CONFLICTS”
“This technology will give pilots of the future the ability to go out significant distances and accomplish their mission to a degree that today’s helicopters are just not capable of.”
ARMY AND THE FORCE STRUCTURE PLAN
Defence’s Force Structure Plan 2020 allocates up to $2.1 billion for a long-range rotorcraft capability between 2028 and 2038; and a further $1.6 billion for a “next generation rotorcraft with enhanced capabilities” between 2035 and 2040, but offers no guidance as to what capabilities the Australian Army is looking for.
Whether this is a battlefield lift, or armed reconnaissance helicopter (or both) is anyone’s guess, and even industry figures ADM spoke with during Land Forces were unable to shed any further light on what appears to be merely a ‘placeholder’ requirement in forward planning.
However, if the battlefield of the 2030s is going to be as dangerous as the US Army predicts, the danger of wait- ing a decade (and longer in the case of the Apache, which will only enter service here two years before FARA), could arguably leave Army incapable of keeping up with its major ally in future conflicts. ■
