BRAIN OF THE ANZACS SAAB’S 9LV COMBAT SYSTEM

Little noticed outside defence circles, the Saab 9LV naval combat management system has evolved from its original analogue beginnings to an Australian success story – an advanced CMS up there with the best in the world.
99LV is at the heart of the Navy’s upgraded Anzac frigates, once derided as floating targets but now regarded as per- haps the best small warships of their type in the world.
9LV will eventually feature on at least six classes of Royal Australian Navy vessels – the Anzacs, Canberra-class land- ing helicopter dock (LHD), Supply-class replenishment ship and Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, mine countermea- sures vessels and survey vessels.
As well, the nine new Hunter-class frigates will feature a 9LV-derived tactical interface to the primary US Aegis combat system, as will three Hobart-class DDGs when they undergo their Aegis upgrade.
Future iterations of 9LV will continue to interface future capabilities to deal with emerging threats.
Saab is understandably proud of 9LV, now in service with more than a dozen navies, but especially of its contribution to the Royal Australian Navy.
