SEAPOWER COMBAT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 103
Also added were the Vampir NG Infrared Search and Track and Sharpeye navigation radar. From 2018, under the Anzac Mid-life Capability Assurance Program (AM- CAP), the CEAFAR2 L-Band phased array radar replaced the original Raytheon SPS-49(V)8 ANZ long-range surveil- lance radar.
Where the original Anzac frigate featured a single fire control channel which would have worked against one or maybe two slow enemy missiles, the Anzac-class can now detect, track and engage multiple fast-moving air and sur- face threats with ESSM missiles. 9LV is at the heart of this.
AUSTRALIAN INTERFACE
The Commonwealth didn’t specify 9LV for the three new Hobart-class DDGs, whose key design decisions predate the success of the Anzac upgrades. The Hobarts feature the US Aegis combat system.
However, a Saab tactical interface – referred to as the Australian Interface (AI) - will be fitted to the Hobarts when they undergo a comprehensive upgrade to take the Aegis system to the latest baseline from 2024.
Significantly, the Commonwealth specified a Saab Australia-developed Australian Interface for the nine new Hunter-class frigates.
This will pose a substantial integration challenge as the
Australian CEA radars and Aegis CMS are also specified, all to go aboard a vessel initially designed for completely different British and European systems.
Aboard the Hobarts and Hunters, the Australian inter- face will integrate with the upgraded Aegis and non-Aegis sensors and effectors.
Central to the success of 9LV are the multi-function consoles (MFCs), with a new design to equip upcoming and upgraded ves- sels. Saab says this next-generation MFC provides a stable, intuitive platform for the monitoring and control of multiple systems simul- taneously.
“FUTURE ITERATIONS
OF 9LV WILL CONTINUE TO INTERFACE FUTURE CAPABILITIES TO DEAL WITH EMERGING THREATS”
    Saab worked with the University
of South Australia and DST Group plus naval operators to develop this MFC, with the objective of increasing ef- ficiency and enhancing operator comfort. It’s now being manufactured locally by SAGE Automation.
“When used in conjunction with Saab’s command and control software (for example the 9LV CMS), its character- istics combine to reduce operator mental load and fatigue, decreasing reaction times and saving valuable seconds in critical situations,” Saab said.
