Sustainable Green Printing
Customers are increasingly demanding green credentials from their suppliers, and PVCA has a programme to take its members on the
GP is the industry’s environmental certification programme run by the Print & Visual
Communication Association. According to the PVCA, the programme saves members money through reduced waste and provides a verifiable green competitive edge.
SGP is based on ISO14001 framework and is tailored to meet the needs of business
and the demands of customers by affordably managing environmental expectations and responsibilities, PVCA says.
“Sustainable Green Print (SGP) is morphing into something customers want, and the community expects,” PVCA business sustainability manager Keiran May says.
“SGP will mean more than just another environmental logo – it will tell your story about print, packaging and signage.”
Sustainable Green Print recognises that one size does not fit all, and is designed specifically for the print, packaging and visual communication industry.
Training is delivered via self-paced learning modules and personal contact with the PVCA's national standards and accreditation manager. “We
do much of the work for you, through our industry-specific resources,” May says. Using those resources, he says, will enable print businesses to:
• comply with key
environmental laws that
impact on your business
• manage environmental risks
specific to your business
the industry environmental risks and associated control measures on your behalf. This will help printing business to save both time and money. You also have a choice of three industry-customised, audited and certified levels beginning from entry level (Level 1) and progressing through to Level 3, which prepares you for ISO14001.
All levels are linked progressing to Level 3 and beyond. If you start at Level 1 and want to complete Level 3 in 12 months time, your Level 3 training will include the Level 2 components required for you to achieve ISO14001. There will also be a cost saving since the Level 2 audit will not be required. SGP is specifically designed to prepare printers for the ISO14001 audit, should they want to attain it.
If you already have ISO14001 and want the SGP Level
three certification, then on validation of the ISO14001 certification, and by meeting the KPIs attached to Level Three during your audit, you will be accredited.
For members who already have current ISO14001 certification, your fee is $110 per annum. For Level 1 it is $600, Level 2 is $1,500, Level 3 (ISO14001 audit may attract a separate fee) is $3,500.
All fees exclude GST. You must be a full financial member of Printing Industries to commence & retain SGP certification.
To become an SGP certified printer take the four steps to certification which are:
1. Contact PVCA to discuss the
option best suited for your
business needs.
2. Enroll in the training course
appropriate to your selected
level.
3. Implement the required
procedures within your
company.
4. Successfully complete the
audit assessment at the end of your implementation level. 21

Go green: Sustainable Green Printing programme from PVCA
• develop control measures to prevent noncompliance with environmental laws and
• document actions, undertake internal audits and manage your EMS.
All SGP certification is
audit-driven and comprises comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) documentation (worksheets, guides, and templates), and a support network.
There are three levels in the Sustainable Green Print journey.
SGP Level 1 is focused on waste, recycling, storage, and handling and is ideal for a small business that is looking to commence environmental compliance. It covers record- keeping, compliance, cleaner production practices and waste management, along with a simple environmental management system, which is your pathway to sustainability.
SGP Level 2 introduces additional levels of management and control, including the tracking of waste streams and brings in a focus on your energy consumption and carbon footprint. This
level provides key performance indicators for printing businesses covering waste, recycling, energy, water, incident management, storage and handling of printing
chemicals, energy, and air emissions.
Level 3 ensures your
firm has a fully operational
EMS that maximises the
overall benefits of the SGP program. This level provides
all the necessary groundwork, including documentation and key performance indicators customised to your printing company’s conditions. Your firm will also be prepared for full ISO 14001 certification, if desired, and the certification simplified and compliance costs reduced.
According to the PVCA, SGP provides:
• standard environmental risk profiles for printers
• control measures to cover acceptable risk levels
• essential templated documents for your firm’s use
• industry-specific key performance indicators for evaluation
• flexibility to achieve the
level of environmental management and certification
• a stepped approach to continuous improvement
• increased environmental responsibility.
PVCA says SGP differs from
other programmes because it is print industry-specific. SGP has already identified
