markets and opportunities and this will unlock Australian defence industry’s potential to grow, innovate and support Defence’s capability requirements now and into the future. As a government we are continuing to work hard to pro- mote Australian exports and Australian businesses around the world through the Australian Defence Export Office. The Export Office works closely with staff at overseas posts such as defence attaches and leverages Austrade’s overseas presence to help Australian companies position themselves and to compete in overseas markets.
Because of the pandemic, Defence has had to engage vir- tually with our international partners rather than face-to- face but everybody has that challenge. This has included providing pitch training to help Australian companies put their best foot forward for an engagement with foreign militaries and international businesses and using the Aus- trade international network of dedicated business develop- ment managers. At the same time the Export Office is now working with Australian companies as those traditional in- person trade shows resume. So, I encourage businesses to engage with the Australian Defence Export Office to draw on its network for advocacy and initiative.
ADM: How do you intend to help industry to overcome shortages and retain a skilled workforce into the future? PRICE: This is a key focus of mine. Our government’s in- vestment in shipbuilding alone means we’re going to need thousands of workers over the coming years. I was at Hen- derson only a couple of months ago for the keel laying of an offshore patrol vessel and officials from Luerssen were explaining that they will have close to 60 engineering jobs
