AUSPACK 2019 wrapped up as the big- gest AUSPACK show yet, breaking re- cords for number of visitors, biggest floor space, and most adjacent events. The exhibition brought in almost 8000 trade visitors, an increase of 25 per cent compared with the previous largest show. Guests flocked in from around the world to see the new technologies on display, as well as to take part in the ac- companying events for Packaging and Processing Week.
Jonathan Rankin was promoted to CEO of integrated food processing and pack- aging equipment supplier tna after this year returning to the company as chief sales officer. Rankin has more than 30 years’ experience in the food industry, and rejoined tna this year after a stint at
Marel. Co- founder and MD Alf Taylor praised him as the best candi- date for the job, saying he would be able to build on tna’s growth over previous years.
Innovation and sustainability were ma- jor themes at the 2019 AIP Packaging Technical Forum, which was held in a packed room at Sydney’s Sofitel Went- worth. Themed around “Packaging In- novation and Design”, the forum attract- ed domestic and international guests. Speaking to a full house, experts held court on topics ranging from the 2025 National Packaging Targets, to making packaging more accessible to the dis- abled, to innovative design solutions, to fighting food waste.

Orora ran live demonstrations of its Limitronic in-line digital printer at AUSPACK 2019, promising that it would unlock entirely new customer opportu- nities; the printer came to the Australian market thanks to a collaboration be- tween Orora and its partner Limitronic. Also on stand was a virtual reality tour of EFI’s Nozomi C18000 corrugated packaging press, which showcased the setup at Orora’s Melbourne plant; the virtual tour brought plenty of traffic, in- cluding the PKN team.

Packaging Partners purchased the assets and design IP of Adaptapack, the robotic case packing technology business devel- oped by APPMA founding member Walls Machinery, which went into administra- tion in late 2018. Packaging Partners con- firmed the Adaptapack brand would be dis- continued; however,
the company said it would support the ex- tensive installed base of machines in Aus- tralia and Asia via its distribution partners including Foodmach.
Over 400 people gathered at the APPMA Awards of Excellence gala dinner, held during AUSPACK, to recognise and cele- brate excellence; innovation; leadership; and best practice in the packaging and pro- cessing industry. Foodmach and HMPS were the night’s big winners, picking up three and two awards respectively, while ProSeal (below) picked up one for Customer Collaboration. The awards had returned after a four-year hiatus, and received 50 entries across five categories.

PKN attended the AUSPACK 2019 Business and Industry Conference, which took more than 300 delegates through the worlds of smart, connected, and sustainable packag- ing and processing with two days of expert speakers, panel discussions, and breakout sessions. Sustainability, digital packaging print, e-commerce, active and intelligent packaging, and navigating economic head- winds were all on the agenda.

ON THE COVER: Matthews Australasia un- veiled its new branding, including a refresh of its iconic chameleon logo. The new look reflected its expanded horizons and colourful future, while maintaining the focus on adaptability, CEO Mark Dingley told PKN. Along with the rebrand, Matthews also signed a deal with Kodak to supply digital inkjet printing systems for the Australian and New Zealand packag- ing, labelling, and printing markets.
The 2019 Packaging Innovation and Design Awards (PIDAs) were held in Sydney, cele- brating the best of the best in eleven catego- ries. The PIDAs are a key feeder into the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards, and this year’s winners included Pact Group; Danone; and Impact International. The 2019 Industry Professional of the Year Award was also presented on the night, to Joe Foster of O.F Pack.
