Opportunities for advancement
WELCOME to our July-August issue. Some may be heaving a sigh of relief we are half way through this surreal year, others are wondering what happened to May – and while we’re at it, how was June only 10 days long?
Compass Group MD for APAC Mark van Dyck provides his industry insights this month, advocating for attention to shift from protecting business to seeking out the massive opportunities he sees throughout
Asia. His advice is for Australia to be less food bowl and more gourmet delicatessen. Read more on page 6.
George Peppou and Tim Noakesmith are the founders of Vow Food, a start-up developing and researching cell-based meat. The idea of growing meat from cells is a polarising one, but biotech’s trajectory is not slowing and neither are the pressures to feed a growing global population in a sustainable way. They are our Rising Star this month, see page 8.
Some of our features this month include the rise
of the ready meal (page 14) and how sparkling wine house Domaine Chandon worked with Sidel to overhaul its bottling and packaging line (page 22). We also take a look at hard seltzers, what they are and why they so popular (page 24).
We take a moment to celebrate the 70th anniversary of equipment manufacturer and food processing industry supplier, Heat and Control. Founded in 1950, it says it is still focused on advancing the food industry (and many others) with science, imagination and unmatched commitment. Even after seven decades, I am sure 2020 has been like no other. With almost 1600 employees worldwide in more than 30 offices, the company plans to mark the occasion with a 12-month long celebration (page 45).
Onward!
