With a focus on showcasing the very best emerging photographic talent across Australia and New Zealand, the awards recognise and acknowledge talented photographers in the early stages of their careers or those simply working towards being the very best photographers they can be.
The popularity of the competition continues, and over the last three years total entries have grown by almost 90%. For the 2021 contest, we introduced two new categories – Black & White and Open. The two categories introduced last year – Single Shot and Animal – proved to be the most popular, attracting the highest number of entries.
HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS
To be a contender for the title of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2021, photographers with less than four years’ full-time experience working as a professional photographer were invited to submit portfolios of three images across any of the eight categories and/or enter the Single Shot category. Those with no professional experience were also eligible to enter. After an initial review of entries by the editor of Capture magazine, a shortlist was produced.
Like previous years, we always rely on a large judging panel comprising some of the world’s leading photographers and industry experts (see page 66). This year we were fortunate to have a total of 37 who lent their wisdom and expertise across a number of categories to vote for their favourite portfolios, ranking their top five. From the category winners, judges were then asked to rank their three favourite portfolios to determine the overall winner – Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2021.
RECOGNITION
Along with winners and runners-up, in this edition we also share top ranked portfolios for each category, along with the top finalists in the Single Shot category. As photographers were able to enter the same category with more than one entry, their

SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS
The continued success of this competition lies with the stunning quality of entries received, the involvement of an amazing panel of judges, and the support of our sponsors. Many thanks and much gratitude to the leading professionals on the judging panel for their time, wisdom, and expertise scrutinising the entries.
Much thanks must also go to our major sponsor, Fujifilm, and all our category sponsors: BenQ, Cyclorama, EIZO, NiSi, SanDisk, Spicers, The Brownbill Effect, and WD.
Without their incredible generosity and commitment to supporting emerging photographic talent, competitions like this simply aren’t possible. This year the total prize pool was worth over $30,000, with $21,000 in prizes, plus cash prizes of $9,000 – the richest in the competition’s history. The Emerging Photographer of the Year receives the grand prize – a Fujifilm X-T4 and XF18-135mm lens valued at $4,578, while the overall runner-up receives a Fujifilm X100V valued at $2,349. Category winners receive a mix of cash prizes and prizes from our category sponsors. Category runners-up each receive a Fujifilm XF10 valued at $799 from our major sponsor, Fujifilm.
