WorldStar-dust settles on ANZ packaging
This new closure complements the two caps in this size currently used in the pharmaceutical and vitamin markets.
Cormack launches anti-counterfeit closure solution
THE winners of the 2021 WorldStar Packaging Awards were officially recognised dur- ing a virtual awards ceremony on 9 June, and in the biggest news of the night, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), took out the Gold for Sustainable Packaging Design.
CCEP won the pinnacle Gold for its work in producing Australia’s first 100 per cent rPET bottle for carbonated bev- erages – a world-first in the Coca-Cola bottler system to make the change at scale.
As a result, it’s now producing all single-serve carbonated and water bottles in 100 per cent rPET in Australia including Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite, as well as Keri Juice, Mount Franklin and Barista Bros.
The increase in the use of rPET reduces the amount of new plastic resin used by the com- pany by an estimated 10,000 tonnes per year in Australia.
“We are so happy that we not only won a WorldStar Packaging general award, but that we have also been awarded the Gold Sustainable Packaging Special Award for 2021,” said Marlene CronjeV- ermeulen, Future Works man- ager at CCEP.
“The Gold Sustainable Packaging Special Award truly is the crowning achievement for our team and will form the plat- form from which our sustain- able initiatives will develop.
Overall, 10 Australia and New Zealand companies were internationally recognised with 13 awards across seven catego- ries. Winners from the ANZ region combined, received the fourth highest amount of WorldStar Packaging Awards in the world, behind Japan (26), China (22) and the USA (14).
The 2021 ANZ WorldStar winners are winners from the 2020 Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards pro- gram, which is the exclusive feeder program for the World- Star Packaging Awards. The 2021 PIDA winners are now eli- gible for entry into the 2022 WorldStar programme.
The categories where the ANZ were recognised include Food, Beverage, Labelling & Decora- tion, Health & Personal Care, Household, Packaging Materials & Components, and Transit. ■
CCEP won the pinnacle Gold for its work in producing Australia’s first 100% rPET bottle for carbonated beverages.
SYDNEY-BASED closure manufac- turer Cormack Packaging has launched a new 38mm tamper- evident child resistant closure (38TECR-J), which the company says has taken two years of tech- nical development to ensure a solution that will perform well on both glass and plastic necks.
“There is a growing demand from retailers to have visual external tamper evidence as a way for them to reduce in store product theft,” says Howard Glinn, GM sales & marketing at Cormack.
“For the export market, this will now also provide a dual tamper-evident system when an induction seal is added, that is often demanded by markets such as China to reduce coun- terfeiting of the end product.”
This new closure comple- ments the two caps in this size currently used in the phar- maceutical and vitamin mar- kets, namely the 38 TEC – the 38/400 tamper evident flat cap, and the 38 CR-J – the relatively new 38/400 jump moulded child resistant cap. The latter has a newly designed outer to help elderly consumers or arthritis sufferers access the pack with ease.
“38 TECR-J is now the addi- tion of the child resistant and tamper evident features all in one cap solution,” Glinn explains. “We have been able to use the identical outer cap shell
for both CR versions that will allow customers to use the same capping chuck for both versions on their filling line.”
The family of three caps can also all use a wide range of lin- ing materials from basic foam to pressure seal, paper backed and even foam with induction foil options.
“The Meyer glass-friendly option is also seeing good growth across the family of caps. It gives an excellent seal on glass as well as on HDPE bot- tles. You no longer need to have different liners for your range of packaging in different bottle materials,” Glinn adds.
According to Cormack, this new 38 TECR-J closure also pro- vides a robust solution for the chemical market.
“With a new special grade of resin on the inner, it offers increased chemical resistance and is no longer talc filled. Applications we can see will be automotive coolants and lubri- cants, plus most chemical con- centrates,” Glinn says.
And, as another first in this market, Cormack is able to make the CRTE inners in a range of colours subject to mini- mum volumes.
Glinn says, “We plan to launch with a yellow inner in our stock range as this will pro- vide the consumer with a very easy way to identify the tamper band is not broken.” ■
