                   July-August 2021 | www.packagingnews.com.au COMMENT | MANAGING EDITOR 3
Are you listening?
IN our world of stimulation overload, it’s easy not to pay due attention to what’s being communicated. We listen with half an ear preparing our response, instead of letting the speak- er’s words sink in until we arrive at that place of common understanding.
Now, I’ve been doing a lot of listen- ing lately, courtesy of our relatively new media platform, The PKN Podcast. Launched in the height of the pandemic, this channel through which we bring listeners “the [w]rap on all things packaging” has opened my ears, and hopefully some of yours, to insights and opinions we would otherwise not be privy to.
As podcast host, I am the custodian of this spoken content on behalf of PKN, and take seriously the respon- sibility of keeping the conversations real, the dialogue authentic, the delivery on point. And I count myself fortunate to have among my invited guests many of the packaging
industry’s thought leaders, innova- tors, movers and shakers.
It struck me yesterday, as I tuned in to our studio to record Episode 32 (I know, right, that’s a lot of listening already), how much wisdom and expertise is coming over our PKN airwaves, and that many people may not be aware of this rich source of inspiration and education that’s just a download away.
The topics we cover are wide-rang- ing – in keeping with the breadth of the packaging value chain itself, and catering to the interests of all stake- holders – and I believe the contribu- tion it makes to the broader packaging conversation is both valuable and vital. If we are to accelerate packaging innovation and bring about sustain- able change in the time frame scoped out by the National Packaging Targets, then hearing from our industry’s lead- ers, educators, and innovators – who are out there making change happen – helps you make informed choices on your path to implementing sus- tainability in your business.
We all learn differently, and con- sume media in different ways. And as a long-standing publisher and edi-
tor, who started work in an era when print was the only channel, I wouldn’t dream of promoting one platform over another. Curating content is one of my greatest joys,
whether it’s in the written word, via video, at our Live events, or via
the podcast.
But what the podcast brings is the
unplugged and extended version of
the feature article, the opinion piece, the technology update. It takes us back to a primal form of communication – sound. And it
strikes a chord with many.
As you scroll through our enewsletters, surf our website, watch our video bulletins and read the pages of this print publica- tion, if there’s a voice whispering “I want more” then heed the call. The PKN Podcast is free and available on all popular platforms, or on our
website.
Lend us your ears. There’s so much
to learn ■
