 “Attaining these qualifications will go a long way in improving the overall knowledge and skillset in the industry, and to ensure that a technical knowledge void is filled with suitably qualified people.
“We need more packaging knowl- edge professionals and education helps us get exposure to new ideas and concepts that we can use to appreciate and improve the world around us, and the world within us.”
KEY FINDINGS
Forming a picture of who works in what industry sector, the sur- vey shows 46 per cent of the total respondents work in food, followed by 13 per cent in the beverage indus- try, while 11 per cent indicated that they work in packaging materials.
In terms of job function, 30 per cent of the total respondents indicated that they work in pack- aging technology/design. This was followed by marketing/sales at 15.9% and 11.2% in research and development.
Educational levels of respon- dents indicated that 46% have a graduate degree, while 23% have an undergraduate degree. Building on AIP’s 2021 report, this is a con- tinued indication that the industry is highly educated at degree-level qualifications
In terms of packaging-specific qualifications, 21% of the respon- dents have a Diploma in Packaging Design, 10% have completed the Master of Food & Packaging Innovations, 9% have a Certificate in Packaging, and 2% have quali- fied with the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology.
Kelton said, “This is a positive sign that more packaging profes- sionals are coming to the AIP to further their education.”
Another pleasing finding from the survey relates to the length of service for many respondees.
58% of the total respondents have more than 20 years’ experi- ence in the packaging industry.
“This is an indication of lon- gevity in the industry and stable careers,” Pienaar said.
Added to this, there is a rela- tively high level of satisfaction with job security, with 38 per cent of the total respondents indi- cating they are ‘very secure’ in their job, while 33 per cent are ‘somewhat secure’.
