                MACHINERY MATTERS MARCH – APRIL 2023 ■ 2
In 2017, 170,899 visitors attended Interpack from 169 countries, to visit 2860 exhibitors from 55 countries.
Processing and Packaging – an industry on the move
Welcome to our second edition of Machinery Matters for 2023, brought to you by APPMA in an exclusive partnership with PKN Packaging News and Food & Drink Business.
As mentioned in the previous edition,
we’re now welcoming back international
events. Interpack, the largest trade fair for
the packaging industry, is making its
long-awaited return to Düsseldorf in May.
Focusing on the future of packaging and
processing machinery, technology,
packaging and materials, and their application within sectors such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and bakery, as well as non-food and industrial goods, Interpack is a show not to be missed.
APPMA, in partnership with PKN, will be hosting a networking event on 5 May for those attending from Australia and New Zealand.
On the domestic front, increasing costs associated with business operations, supply chains and material availability are continuing to create concerns for the industry, with contributing factors including rising interest rates, wage pressures, cost of products and materials, or simply a lack of materials. When combined with increased regulation and compliance requirements, evolving working environments and staff working arrangements, the challenge for business to keep ahead of the curve in a manner that delivers to all stakeholders will continue to be a topic of conversation for some time.
APPEX 2024
Preparations for APPEX 2024 are well underway. The launching of this stand-alone, premium Australasian, all-of-industry processing and packaging expo catering for machinery, ancillary equipment, materials and packaging, food processing and industry services is proving to be an overwhelming success. With secured exhibitor space allocations already well above the total of AUSPACK 2022, the industry commitment and support for APPEX has exceeded expectations. I encourage you to explore your stand options now and be part of APPEX 2024.
APPMA Awards of Excellence
In addition to APPEX, the APPMA 2024 Awards of Excellence will be launched mid-year 2023, providing plenty of time for all eligible companies to lodge their submissions. The awards aim to identify excellence, leadership and best practice throughout Australia’s processing and packaging industry. With machinery award categories catering for SMEs (companies with up to $10 million annual turnover) and corporates (over $10m) as well as the packaging, sustainability, leadership and digital innovation awards, there are opportunities for all companies to participate. Look out for more information and announcements regarding the awards in the coming weeks.
I look forward to seeing everyone during 2023 at APPMA and other industry events.

APPMA at Interpack
APPMA will be strongly represented at Interpack, the global mega trade show for the packaging and processing industry, taking place from 4-10 May in Düsseldorf, Germany.
It has been six years since the last show was staged, and in that time a huge amount of technology development has taken place, with anticipation running high on the part of exhibitors and visitors to see what’s new and how it will shape the industry of tomorrow. In 2017, 2860 exhibitors from 55 counties showcased their innovation to visitors from 169 countries.
“It will be good to see some familiar faces and to network with colleagues from our region.”
According to the Interpack show organisers, 65 per cent of the visitors were decision makers, with 75 per cent from senior or top management positions in their companies.
APPMA members will be exhibiting in their own right, or on their overseas principals’ stands. A number of APPMA Board representatives will also be present, as well as CEO Michael Moran and APPMA marketing and events manager,
Denni Egan.
“At a show with an expected attendance of over
170,000 international visitors, it will be good to see some familiar faces and to network with colleagues from our region,” said CEO
Michael Moran.
“For those registered to attend Interpack, we are delighted to advise that APPMA, in partnership with PKN, will be hosting a networking event at the show from 4-5pm on 5 May at the International Lounge. The event will be open to both APPMA members and non-members visiting the show,” Moran said.
