Airbus also proposes a multi-layered approach to skill- ing the space industry more broadly, including the estab- lishment of a national ‘Maier Space School’, to encourage secondary school students to consider a career in the in- dustry, be it as an astrophysicist, engineer or in the manu- facturing sector.
Rowse says students would then have the opportunity to graduate to a ‘Maier Space Academy’. “Once someone has been through the academy, they will have that hands-on experience which allows you to develop capability,” he says. “And that’s a real difference, it’s trying to meld a practical and academic side so that students graduate with a much more rounded view.”
Airbus also proposes a ‘Team Maier Trailblazer’ pro- gram, which will be an SSTL-led platform to develop, dem- onstrate and experiment Australian payloads – both civil and military. This is intended to provide a head start into a space capability and important experience for Australian companies seeking to join global supply chains.
But while these initiatives form part of the JP9102 bid, Rowse says funding them will come from seeding money from government and industry and revealed that Airbus is already in discussions with state governments.
“We don’t want to drain Defence’s budget, so our aspi- ration is that each of these projects will become self-sus-

taining. There will be start-up funding required, but once they’re stood up the expectation is for them to become self- sustaining businesses in their own right,” he explains.
“We see the AIC plan as independent to the delivery of JP9102. The delivery will be based on heritage satellites and the ground segment will be developed by our Team Ma- ier partners, so we have a solid level of confidence around schedule and we believe that schedule meets CASG’s re- quirements and needs for MILSATCOM.” ■
