Torrid times
WELL hasn’t 2020 started with a thump. It has been torrid to say the least, with catastrophic fires affecting all of us. Many of our primary producers, those on which so much of our food and beverage production relies, have been devastated. If we are looking for a glimmer of hope or a silver lining, perhaps it is seeing Australians rally around those affected most greatly. In my house we have a rule that no one gets left behind. I draw comfort
from seeing that manifest on such a large scale.
And, as baffling as it can sometimes seem, life goes on and the
world keeps turning. In the shadow of all that has occurred over the summer break, I welcome you to Food & Drink Business
for 2020. We have a cracker of a year ahead and cannot
wait to share it with you as it unfolds.
We start by looking at the trends to watch. Our special report begins on page 18 and provides comprehensive insights on major food and beverage trends. And yes, plant-based proteins, better-for-you foods and no/low alcohol spirits are still white hot.
Our Rising Star (page 10) kicks off the year with a profile on Barbell Foods. Four friends started
a biltong (air dried steak) business using only the best organic beef and are so committed to a
quality consistent product, they built their own facility rather than outsource production. It’s a great read.
Being in the dairy industry in Australia is not for
the fainthearted and the fire crisis has only
compounded this for some dairy communities. Doris Prodanovic’s story on the state of the industry (page 32)
is sobering. But again, there are good news stories as well
– 9Cha is Australia’s first milk tea brand and Meredith Dairy is having great export success (page 34).
All our regular features are back and as always, please get in touch with your news and story ideas.
Onward.
