Impact and originality are important. Have a different point of view, or a point of difference which makes the subject strong and appealing to the viewer. This demonstrates the thought process of the photographer in being creative and imaginative.
MATT PALMER
Without colour to assist in separating elements within a scene, lighting becomes even more important. The right light can create the contrast and separation we desire in a strong monochromatic image, as well as establishing mood and highlighting shape and form. Look for strong forms and shapes that are capturing light that suits the subject. A delicate subject needs gentle light, while a geometric or strong one may benefit from more directional or harsher light to bring out its qualities.
ALEX CEARNS
When capturing black-and- white images, you’re not able to lead with strong colours, but you can still create an image which has impact. Train your eye to notice different patterns, shapes, and textures, then construct your composition around these elements. Thinking about your shot before you take it and aiming to capture what you see in your mind’s eye will mean less time editing later.
