Monochromatic images don’t have to be black, white, and grey. In fact, the word monochromatic simply means an image made up using various shades of the one colour. So, don’t be scared to totally desaturate your photographs in Lightroom or ACR, and then add a hint of colour back into the image using the Split Toning controls. The secret to adding colour back into the photograph is to keep it subtle. Less is more.

Look for the action and capture the story within your viewfinder. Be patient and put the time and effort into practising the camera techniques that excite you. Once you begin to understand these techniques (and have made a lot of mistakes along the way) it will become easier to see the photos that are “that little bit more special”– then you will be able to push your boundaries further and chase that next best shot.
