LITTORAL MANOEUVRE VESSEL - MEDIUM
From an LCM-8 replacement perspective, the Common- wealth’s requirements are quite wide-ranging, to provide for the rapid mobilisation of an amphibious force and its reliable projection over large distances for long periods.
The new vessel must have a crew of at least ten and be capable of carrying a full combat load in conditions up to and including Sea State 4, have a range of at least 500 nau- tical miles at least 15 knots, and must be reliable enough to operate for ten days or more without failure of a mission critical component or system.
This is a stringent set of requirements, but ADM under- stands a number of Defence companies have responded to the RFT, including the Australian Maritime Alliance (Serco and Civmec); Birdon Group; Landing Craft Austra- lia (Navantia Australia and UGL) and a team comprising Austal, BMT and Raytheon Australia.
AUSTAL, BMT AND RAYTHEON AUSTRALIA
Raytheon Australia announced a teaming arrangement with Austal and BMT for the LCM-8 replacement compo- nent of Land 8710 (Phase 1A) in May.
The industry team says its new Independent Littoral Ma- noeuvre Vessel (ILMV) is based on a proven design and carefully tailored for the Australian environment. It said the Australian ILMV will be a “world class, future ready capability and sovereign solution” which is aligned with the Army’s new and complex littoral manoeuvre requirements.
WA-based shipbuilder Austal will build the ILMV at its fa- cility in Henderson if the team succeeds as preferred bidder. “As one of Australia’s largest shipbuilders with an ac- knowledged world class operation and decades of ADF experience, we have an existing workforce that is trusted to deliver on multiple programs from our Henderson ship-
yard. Our unique ability to do
production design in our shipyard
