the logistics burden, to reduce the combat supplies that we need to carry to operate and to reduce the stress on supply chains in our operating environment.
So a couple of just very quick examples: 3D printing means that you don’t have to carry extensive ranges of spare parts for everything, you can actually manufacture them in the field and forward at the place of need.
ADM: How do you intend to shape Army for the future during your tenure as Chief?
LTGEN STUART: Firstly, I take very seriously my moral obli- gation to make sure that our people have the best chance of winning in conflict and returning home. That’s really at the forefront of my mind every day. On our first day in the
We’ve restructured the way we deliver com-
bat health so that we’re pushing our medi-
cal and dental teams forward to the point of
need. There is a fantastic innovation in terms
of really small form factor water purification
technology that is the size of several eskies,
easily moved and obviously it means you don’t
have to then move vast quantities of bulk wa-
ter. We are getting close to being able to ap-
ply leader-follower technology, so one vehicle
crew could be more effective by having three,
four, five vehicles with combat supplies. The brigade has systematised the way they provide a 72-hour pack of combat supplies that is standardised across the brigade and then they’ve systematised that resupply. So, it’s happening today.
To your question of urgency, we’ve been doing it, we con- tinue to do it and it’s about pulling together a range of many small things to create a large effect.
office the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army and I went to the Australian War Me- morial and spent a few moments reflecting at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and reading the names on the Roll of Honour. There are over 80,000 soldiers on that Roll of Honour and our aim is to make sure that we don’t add to that list. So that’s the cen- tring thought and feeling but coming back to what I need to be doing on a day-to-day basis, it comes back to those four priorities in the short term; of trust, of readiness, now
and in the future; on best and most effective and efficient use of our resources, and making sure Australians hear and understand the story of our Army and its service to our na- tion. We want to make sure that we play our part and con- tribute to the Joint Force and to our allies and partners and we do that by delivering relevant and credible capability in the land domain. ■
