 November–December 2020 | www.packagingnews.com.au COMMENT | MANAGING EDITOR 3 Of community and
collective action
WELL here we are, approaching the tail end of what has been a tumultu- ous and confronting year, one that has tested our humanity and our leadership on many levels.
In our workplace at PKN, we have adjusted swiftly because, like most of you, we had to. We’ve innovated on the fly and we’ve jumped in boots and all on new initiatives when we had no inkling of how they would turn out. Introducing video and pod- cast platforms at a time like this was both necessary, exciting and, well, at times just downright scary. And my team did this despite facing enor- mous personal challenges.
Resilience has reigned supreme.
And I’ve seen this same resilience out there in our industry. I have the good fortune of engaging with many companies and industry leaders in the course of bringing packaging sto- ries to our platforms. This issue – all 124 pages of it – weaves the narrative of an industry that has always responded with agility and tenacity, taking action when called upon, and doing so despite a steady stream of obstacles coming its way.
In compiling this edition – from the current news and events of today through to the packaging industry’s evolution over six decades – it became patently clear to me that we are in a solid place. Our sense of community is strong, our collegiate spirit is flour- ishing, and we are acutely aware that collective action is what will drive us forward.
We have big mountains to climb, make no mistake. But we’re on the path together, map in hand, innovat- ing on the go as we discover smarter ways of doing things.
This 60th anniversary bumper edi- tion, brim-full of inspiring stories, exciting innovation, and interesting business developments, should leave no doubt in your mind that the indus- try is in good hands.
The work being done by the indus- try’s peak organisations and bodies to tackle the pressing challenges of our time – packaging waste and food waste – speaks of an unwavering commitment to achieving our holy grail, a circular economy.
But what gives me the most hope is witnessing how the people in packag- ing – members of these organisations who are leading companies, inspir- ing teams, and sharing their knowl- edge and expertise to the greater good of industry – are bold, audacious and uncompromising in their ‘no time to waste’ approach.
2020 has shone a light on what mat- ters most, and as a packaging com- munity we’ve walked towards that light. May it continue to shine on you over the holiday season and into what we hope is a brighter New Year.
